Nós Brasil! We Brazil! German Contribution to the X Architecture Biennial in São Paolo Deutsche Beitrag zur X Architekturbiennale in São Paulo

Nós Brasil! We Brazil! is the German contribution to the 2013 International Architecture Biennial in São Paulo curated by raumtaktik. Nós Brasil! We Brazil! is part of Weltstadt – Who creates the city? – a joint initiative of Goethe-Institut and the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS).

The project Nós Brasil! We Brazil! is aiming at further understanding the specific reality of contemporary Brazilian cities, as well as the challenges they face. More specifically, it is intended to explore how new groups and organisations take initiative in a context where urban planning, as a once centralized practice, is now an increasingly diversified affair being supplemented, infiltrated, or even partially replaced by these new players and processes. The asserted emergence of a so called “New Middle Class” in Brazil, the intense social and economic transformations over the last decade and the clash of global finance with local infrastructure raise various issues: Who are the new actors making the city today? How will Brazilian cities and the citizens respond to these changes? How will Brazil’s city look like in the future?

Nós Brasil! We Brazil! documents three workshops in Curitiba, Porto Alegre and Salvador. In each city curator Matthias Böttger and artist/architect Luis Berríos-Negrón created a large Y-shaped table to discuss with local activists, artists, urban dwellers and architects: who creates the city? The visions and finding from the workshops were displayed at the biennale in Sao Paulo and discussed in a fourth workshop.

Nós Brazil! We Brazil! is a project by the Goethe-Institut on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban development. It is curated by Matthias Böttger and invited artist / architect Luis Berríos-Negrón. Jointly realized with the Goethe-Instituts in São Paulo, Curitiba, Porto Alegre and Salvador.
