n Germany, about seven million tons of furniture land in the trash heap every year. The ReDesign project combats this luxury of wastefulness by using old furniture as source material in the production of new furnishings and fixtures. In addition to preventing waste, the process promotes reduced co2 emissions and the reintegration of disadvantaged youth and the permanently unemployed. The appearance of each new piece of furniture is dependent on the materials gathered for its construction and the individual skills of those who assemble it. The resultant “flawed” aesthetic makes the history of these unique items visually readable. With its recycled furniture, ReDesign supports society’s necessary development away from a “throwaway mentality” and towards a greater commitment to protecting resources.
