Ausstellungsreihe aut.raumproduktion über das gesamte Jahr 2010
im aut. architektur und tirol, Innsbruck.

21. Januar - 18. Dezember, 2010, Innsbruck

Ausstellungsreihe: aut. raumproduktion

Kurator und künstlerischer Leiter: Matthias Böttger, Konzept: Matthias Böttger + Friedrich von Borries

Architektur ist Raumproduktion. Mauern ziehen. Volumen definiert. Raum

TV Towers - 8,559 Meters Politics and Architecture

Exhibition at the German Architecture Museum (Deutsches Architektur Museum) DAM, Frankfurt, 2009

Be it in Moscow, Belgrade, Berlin or Cairo – there is hardly a city or nation wanting to present itself as progressive that has resisted the showy construction of a television tower. The TV towers that have risen up over cities since 1950 are almost always symbols of social change or political and economic power. No other type of building in the second half of the 20th century was as politically charged as the television tower.

The global distribution of the towers, which began in 1956 with the inauguration of the Stuttgart Television Tower, traces the political history of the 20th century. The ideological competition between the East and West was followed by rivalry between global cities as to which could be most attractive to tourists and corporations. The first television towers were mainly built in Europe and are currently almost exclusively built in emerging countries in Asia and the Middle East.

The exhibition will showcase 25 realized or planned television towers in Ashgabat, Auckland, Barcelona, Baghdad, Belgrade, Berlin, Brasilia, Guangzhou, Jakarta, Yekaterinburg, Johannesburg, Cairo, Las Vegas, Liberec, Moscow, Prague, Riga, Shanghai, Stuttgart, Tashkent, Tehran, Tokyo (2), Toronto and Vilnius. There have never been so many TV towers in one exhibition before.

Unlike in many architecture exhibitions, visitors to the DAM will not find any architectural models, renderings or engineering plans, but rather a collection of objects from everyday culture: stamps and postcards, cocktail mixers and cheese skewers, bedside lamps and schnapps bottles, pens, snow globes, puzzles and candles. The DAM will become a souvenir shop documenting the variety of individual ways (state) architecture is adopted.

The 7th edition of DMY International Design Festival “Same same, but
different” will kick off in June. Showcasing works by internationally
acclaimed designers as well as reveilling prototypes by the young
talent the festival this year especially focuses on design that makes a
difference. Presenting three huge main exhibition zones next to a
varied program of lectures, panel talks, performances and parties the
festival itself tries to change the city at least for five days.

The exhibition of the DMY Youngsters introduces the up-and-coming
generation of national and international designers. Featuring projects,
prototypes and close-to-production products, the event presents the
freshest design trends, innovations and experiments on a 7.000 m²
exhibition space at the Arena Berlin. It is intended for group and solo
exhibitions of beginners, students and young design studios, companies
or agencies, as well as institutions, design schools and associations.

Paradise Lounge

With “Paradise Lounge“ raumtaktik brings a selection of “Updating
Germany“ to Berlin. This exhibition was initially conceived by
Friedrich von Borries und Matthias Böttger as the German contribution
for the Architecture Biennale 2008 in Venice. The lounge mixes Ton
Mattons installation “Technical Paradise”, “ReDesign” furniture by
Oliver Schübbe and Laleh Torabi’s illustrations for the book “Bessere
Zukunft?”.

Eight correspondents carried out research on how the public space is being developed, used and designed in eight European cities: Dublin, Copenhagen, Naples, Barcelona, Rotterdam, Tirana, Brussels and Berlin. The results of the investigation can be seen from 28 June to 19 October 2008 in the exhibition My Public Space in the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) and in eight kiosks placed on changing locations in the centre of Rotterdam. As one of the correspondents raumtaktik had taken a closer look at seven places that shows the divesity and contrariness of public space in Berlin.

On the occasion of the 2006 football World Cup, raumtaktik designed a travelling exhibition for the German Federal Agency for Civic Education. The exhibition exploited the current occupation with football as a way to draw attention to the ongoing economic, political and cultural effects of globalisation. The five sections of the exhibition were “Interdependence,” “Creation of Value,” “Migration,” “Cultural Identity” and “Social Segregation.”

During the World Cup, the exhibition travelled in a converted cargo container to tournament locations throughout Germany, and in 2008, the exhibition went on display at the Austrian Museum for Industrial Democracy. A catalogue and card game (Schwarzer Peter der Globalisierung, or, in English, Old Maid of Globalisation) were created to accompany the exhibition.

In recent years, Berlin has seen a proliferation of street bars; both entrepreneurs and city politicians seem to have discovered that a riverbank waste land in the German capital often needs no more than a bar made of bamboo wood, a few deck chairs and several tons of sand to be transformed into a dynamic venue. For the Oststrand beach bar near the city’s East Side Gallery, raumtaktik and dramatic advisor/theatre director Max Schumacher decided to bring back the old primary school game of dodgeball by organizing a true “peoples’ game” – a dodgeball contest for all Berlin citizens. In the four years since its inception, the tournament has become a highly-anticipated urban event for which Oststrand is now well-known and well-loved.

Staßfurt was once home to the largest TV manufacturer in the GDR, but today, it is a city without a centre. As a result of potash mining, a 200-hectare expanse that ran diagonally through Staßfurt’s Old Town sank seven meters into the ground: Town Hall, church and historic buildings all had to be demolished. Together with the media artists of Berlin’s visomat inc., raumtaktik developed the TV Staßfurt installation, which captures television images from the city’s scattered “sites of activity” and focuses them on the observer. Can a city centre be created or at least simulated through this type of medial consolidation?

As the lobby for all German art associations, the AdKV naturally participates in every important trade show. raumtaktik’s design for the consortium’s Art Forum exhibition managed to unite the enormously heterogonous AdKV members into a unified whole. Each association was asked to provide a “personal artefact” and to fill out an accompanying form explaining its significance. The implicit allusion of these forms to funding applications was intentional, as was the combination of playfully creative content with an extremely formal visual appearance – a “wallpaper” of formulas.

Trade show visitors were surprised by the absurd collection of objects and moved to find out more. A simple, clever design thus encouraged visitors into dialogue with the exhibition attendants, which is, after all, the goal of any trade show appearance.
