[defend] – domain, rights, status, arguments, and freedom get defended. The claim that was just defined in the apparently open and disorganised room will not be given away. Defensive actions designated battles of the distribution of room and resources. Some defending methods are of a less defensive character, but aggressively express the possibility of a pre-emptive strike. Often, defending freedom and the chances for everybody contradicts with the aim of individual safety and the need for controlling. The problems should not be dealt with one`s backyard. Yet still we cannot keep on watching our world segregate and decompose into pieces. Defending is not to be understood as to adhere to the old but to sustain variety and sustainability by trying new things. (Raumtaktik)

Michl Schmidt + Peter Wendl: Defending normality

What is the state of normality? Is it possible to say that if the human being feels comfortable in his environment, he has gained normality?

I think that normality is far more present than what we can actually reach. I am referring to the fact that we do not really have an idea of the goal of what normality should be. Normality creeps in, rather than deliberately being constructed. It` s true, that normality creeps in, though, considered from the human point of view normality is not just there. This is demonstrated by the fact that the human being constantly needs to defend normality and that if we don`t permanently re-establish and sustain it normality will always be close to faltering. Usually an organised room and not the chaotic, is designated as normal. Even though, it should be the reverse, since the chaotic room automatically produces itself and statistical appears more often then the organised room. Assuming, I have five red and five blue bowls and I throw them on the ground. The chance that they end up lying in a muddle and not seperated in their colours is very high.

The exhibition “The defence of normality” investigates symbols of normality, and their function and their establishment in crises of normality. Especially in these crises the phenomena is the emphasis of the symbolic, which leads to a paradox distortion: The adherence to something already obsolete. Through this, the symbols can serve as concealment for an unhinging normality, or as well be a delusion that suggests: Everything is normal! Beside the obvious appearance of the objects displayed in the exhibition space, they also have an ambiguity. The function does not accomplish the expectance which the appearance gives but all the same provide a contribution to normality. Or to say it with different words; to keep normality with not normal devices.
